I'm looking forward to attending Planet Comicon in Overland Park, Kansas this weekend (March 24 & 25). My former Batman collaborators, Joe Staton (current Dick Tracy artist) and Rick Burchett ( Lady Sabre) are fellow guests, and we'll be doing a panel, along with Archie's Dan Parent, on Sunday. There's a great list of media and comics guests. Some of the other artists attending include Bernie Wrightson, Bruce Jones, Dan Panosian, Michael Golden, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Don Rosa and MANY more! Check out more info HERE, and come on out to see us all!
Oh -- here's the banner to look for to find me.

The Phantom 3-18-12
This week's Phantom. I went back to digital inking on this one -- back to "real" inks next week. My colors.

PHANTOM Sunday 3-11-12
I'm late posting this week's Sunday page -- chalk it up to family stuff and a bout of the flu. All is better now -- and the next page won't take so long to show up. This is the first of two pages from the "Rune Noble" story colored by me. Tom Smith comes back to color a few more afterward. I enjoyed drawing Col. Worubu -- and his Jungle Patrol coffee mug. We have another fun coffee mug design coming up in a couple weeks -- you'll all be amused. The rusty truck was fun to draw and color.
As an extra, here's a look at the digital pencils for this week's strip.

The Phantom 3-4-12 from pencils to color.
Digital pencils for today's Phantom Sunday strip, with lettering and borders added. Drawn in Manga Studio. Below, the same art has been turned into "bluelines" to be printed on bristol for inking by hand.
When inked, the art is scanned and cleaned up -- the blue pencil under the inks dropped out.
Below, the final page for print and web -- colors added digitally by Tom Smith. Since I now have physical originals for the strips (the previous Sundays by me were all digital), I'll be auctioning off the art on eBay as they are published. The first auction will go up soon.

SCARY MONSTERS #82: Marvin!
Another wraparound Scary Monsters magazine cover illustration done. This all digital creation features Chicago horror host "Marvin" and his ghastly "Shock Theatre" crew. You'll also see a Zanti Misfit (and a "Sam-ti" Misfit!) and several creepy crawly arm/hand creatures! Points to those who can identify all three appendages.
Since the subject matter dates to the late '50s, I went for a retro color approach -- cribbing a palette from a vintage Marx Lone Ranger toy box and using comic book-style "big dot" color. I've included a detail shot of Marvin so you can see the color technique. As always, click on the pics for a bigger view. Double click to the SIDE of the pics to see them outside of the slideshow format.
