Here are the Rex Morgan strips from late November to mid-December. The first Sunday page is another seasonal stand alone strip. It doesn't advance the story any -- just establishes the time of year and lets me work on showing Rex and Sarah and how they relate as father and daughter. And gives us a little happy moment before the next storyline starts.

The snowmen are a tribute to the late Richard Thompson, artist of Cul de Sac and the still-with-us Bill Watterson of Calvin and Hobbes fame. I just wanted to tip my hat to Richard and acknowledge his remarkable work and his unfortunate passing. His pal Bill seemed an appropriate addition.
I wanted to start aging Michael in "real time," since, frankly, there's nothing much to do with him
as a baby, except create a reason for June to stay home on extended maternity leave. It'll take a couple more years to get him where I want him to be for more interaction with Sarah and acting as a full character on his own. The first birthday crept up on me mighty fast -- so I'm glad I didn't miss it somehow! The several days of getting Sarah ready for school were designed to lull the readers into a false sense of security -- "Nothing's happening!" they whined -- and then, BLAM! Sarah's accident in the Saturday strip. Don't assume I don't know what I'm doing, folks.

I had initially planned to have Sarah in a car accident -- unbuckling her booster seat's belt to pick up a dropped book or something, at the same time a truck skids on the icy road and hits the car. June would have been driving -- Michael in the car, too. But because of her unbuckled belt, it's Sarah who is injured.

And then there was a big ol' car accident sequence in Judge Parker. Considering that JP is Rex's "sister strip" and runs in a lot of the same papers, I felt I needed to switch gears. I had recently seen some disturbing videos of cars running school bus stop signs, nearly hitting kids -- in some cases they did hit kids. Gears switched.

Sarah's accident came at an unfortunate time for one of our subscribing newspapers. There had been a deadly bus crash in Chattanooga just the week prior to the scheduled running of these strips. Though the Rex story does not involve a bus crash, it still is a bus-related accident, and the paper felt it would be too upsetting to local parents to have this sequence run there. I support their decision to drop the last panel of the Saturday strip and the entire Sunday. There is no way to predict this sort of thing -- all you can do is respond. I had already tried to draw the sequence without exploiting the violence of it (not actually showing Sarah being hit) and in the hospital sequences cut way back on what would really be happening with Sarah -- explicitly to avoid triggering upset in parents who may have gone through this sort of thing. Trying to keep it all "soap opera" and non-specific. All on purpose. And still, we had a problem.

One mea culpa here -- at this point I should have been drawing Michael in a toddler stroller, not the baby carriage-style stroller shown here. He's too big for that. My bad.

Also some have questioned Sarah riding a public school bus to her private school. Well, there are communities in which there are "ride to school" programs in which students at private or charter schools ride public school buses to school -- the parents pay a fee for the service. I didn't feel the need to explain that in the strip, since it's not really a story point, and kind of a boring detail.

Some readers complained about the panel with the bus driver using his cell phone camera to snap pics of cars running the stop sign -- concerned that he should not be using his phone while driving. Um... folks -- the bus is stopped. The stop sign would not be out while he was driving, and he would not be using his cell while driving. I was going for a little irony here -- the accident being caused by the driver of the car being on his cell phone -- and a cell phone also being used to identify the car.

Dolly and Bugsy make their return to the strip, as we reveal the truth about her daughter. I faked out most of the readers, who believed the daughter had died -- but I never once said that in the strip. I said she was "lost," "gone," but never dead.

Also some readers complained that I had drawn the school bus with a stop arm. No -- I had drawn it with a stop sign -- the stop arm is a six foot long contraption with a stop sign attached that helps keep traffic from passing the bus. Not at all what I drew. Again, I do know what I'm doing, folks (baby carriage excepted).

The book Dolly is reading on 12-13-16 is Guild, a excellent Western by my late friend Ed Gorman. I wanted to acknowledge his passing somehow, so worked in a plug for one of his books. If you enjoy a good mystery or Western novel, go search out something by Ed, would you? He was a hell of a writer.

What can I say? I'm a busy guy. Anyhow -- we'll catch up in this post.

I've not been posting my PHANTOM Sundays here lately -- you can see them on King Features' COMICS KINGDOM website, so I don't think I will be posting them here any more -- but the black and white REX dailies are not available at CK (except in a Spanish language version) -- so I'll continue to post the REX strips, so the gray-toned art version can be seen by my fans who don't get REX in their local newspaper.

In these strips, we see the Morgans moved into their new home, the beginnings of a romance between Jordan and Michelle, Sarah's Halloween -- and Milton taking an unfortunate walk. This batch ends with a Thanksgiving strip, and a brief check in with Bugsy and Dolly -- we'll be seeing more of them soon.

Woody Wilson didn't write seasons or holidays (except a non-continuity Christmas strip) into the feature, for reasons of his own. But I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to do a Gasoline Alley inspired leaf raking Sunday page when autumn arrived (see the 10-2-16 Sunday in my previous blogpost), or send Sarah trick or treating (even if it wasn't anything resembling a story), and celebrate the first snowfall (check in on the Comics Kingdom site this coming Sunday). Yes, some folks live in places where these seasons don't happen -- but I feel they are right at place in the old fashioned setting of the Morgan's hometown of Glenwood (in some state somewhere in the US of A). And in collecting examples of early REX strips, I've found plenty of winter/snow sequences in the Nick Dallis-written version of the strip, so I feel justified in bringing back the change of seasons to the feature.

I couldn't resist a couple visual in-jokes on the 10-30-16 Sunday page. In the last panel, the trick or treaters on the left are inspired by some of the kids in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," and the trio on the left are wearing the cursed masks from "Halloween 3: Season of the Witch!"
June finds THE house. Rex and Sarah rake some leaves, as the seasons change in REX's world for the first time in years -- a house is purchased, another is sold and moving day arrives.
This week in REX sees the characters exploring the fact that nurses dating patients is most seriously frowned upon. Rex offers both sides of the issue -- and a possible "out." We'll follow up on this not too far down the line....
Even catching up and posting my PHANTOM strips has been something I haven't found a free moment to do. One of these days....

A few notes about this week's strips -- the unnamed patient in the 9-15-16 strip is clearly black in these toned dailies -- amazingly, he was white in the color version that appears on the Comics Kingdom website, as well as newspapers that print the strip in full color. Crazy, huh?

So -- the big thing that happens this week is Michelle and Jordan meeting. I've been wanting to throw these two together for some time. They are both ex-military, both "super achiever" types -- just seemed a natural thing to do. But how to get them together?

Well -- Jordan can drop by Rex's office for a brief checkup, due to delays in getting in to see his specialist. But then -- we have an ethical issue pop up. It is seriously frowned upon for medical professionals to get romantically involved with their patients. So now we have some questions to ask and answer -- and a stumbling block in the way of a potential relationship. And we'll be dealing with that in future strips.
Another week of B&W REX strips for the folks who otherwise only see the color versions. A reminder that while I color the Sunday strips, the daily color is done by someone else. The gray tones you see on the dailies here are my work -- and, as far as I'm concerned, are the official versions of the daily strips.

This week reminds us that the Morgans are planning a move to a new house -- and presents the flip side of last week -- life and death -- both part of the ongoing experience of a medical professional.

Some readers had trouble recalling the young mother we meet in these strips -- wondering when the drowning rescue sequence happened in the strip. The answer is -- it didn't. This is a event from Rex's life that was not recorded in the comic strip. In other words, I just wrote it -- a "continuity implant" I suppose you'd call it. But I figure not every incident in Rex's life had been recorded on the comics page. As the strip's new writer, I get to add to his history -- them's the rules.
Milton slips deeper into dementia and Rex loses a patient.

The Comics Kingdom comment section was full of complaints (surprise!) and questions regarding the daily sequence, so I wrote and posted the following there in response:

"Dropping in to answer some questions and concerns from those who are treating the strip's subject matter seriously today.

I do have sources for medical advice -- one in my family -- and I do a good amount of research before touching on medical matters. That said, please don't expect too much detail here as regards medications and treatments. For a number of reasons, not the least of which is the limited amount of word space in a daily comic, I'm having to paint with broad brush strokes here. What you're getting are snapshots in the lives of these characters -- not every moment.

One must also take into consideration the fact that writing a daily and Sunday comic strip is as much like doing a puzzle, as it is writing a story. There has to be a certain amount of repetition and recap, and things need to be presented as simply as possible to get the point across in two or three panels a day -- for readers who are often spending less than a minute reading the strip.

I do take the subject of dementia quite seriously -- my mother suffered from it in her later years. We're not going to linger over Milton's illness in great detail. Let's face it, it's not exactly a picnic -- and what reader wants to see such tragedy here every day? That said, the next week or so is about the balance between tragedy and triumph in a doctor's life -- and you'll just have to read it to see what that's about. There is a follow-up to this Milton/Heather/Jordan situation coming in about two months. I won't say more, because the whole idea here is for you to come back and keep reading. No story spoilers from me!

You can assume that Rex and Heather have had a far more detailed discussion of Milton's condition than we see in the strip. We present the highlights here, so we can move the story along. To play out the full conversation that would have happened would have eaten up weeks of strip time -- and that's not good comic strip storytelling.

I have more in mind with Jordan, as you'll see in coming weeks -- and the reveal of the prosthetic leg was not something Woody had planned -- but something of a "retcon" of the character from me. In some ways it was, admittedly, a bit of a stretch -- but I felt the character needed more of a story, and this is part of it.

As for Rex doing more doctor duty -- he will -- but remember, this is essentially a "soap opera" strip and not a medical lecture series. Rex's medical practice will tie into plots regarding friends and family -- think "Days of Our Lives," not "House."

And with TWO kids in the Morgan household now, we'll be seeing a certain amount of family oriented strips that aren't necessarily plot heavy, but character based, as I'm trying to make all the characters -- yes, even the dreaded Sarah -- more relatable and likable. Yeah, I know -- big job there. Stick around."

More complaints -- and to be fair, many compliments -- came with the Sunday page, but it seems trying to explain my motivations to the CK snarker crowd is fighting a losing battle. No matter what I say or do -- and I think I just did my best Sunday page ever -- there will always be those who show up only to ridicule and complain. Those folks don't want to give any strip creator a break, and frankly, prefer the strips to be bad, so they can play the bully and poke fun. No thanks.

That said, I'll gladly explain myself here, on my own turf. It's not standard operating procedure for a hospital to call a doctor in the middle of the night with the sort of update Rex gets in the Sunday page -- UNLESS said doctor has requested a staff member to keep him updated -- which is what I had in mind here. Because of the "snapshot" nature of comics storytelling, I wasn't able to spell out that background detail -- but I didn't think I needed to.

The snarkers want to jump on anything they perceive as an error -- so they were all over the phone call -- and Rex's reaction to his patient's passing. When confronted with something that's "not how that is done," they don't bother to ask the simple question, "But is it possible?" And as far as I'm concerned, if it's possible -- even if it's not probable -- it's a valid story choice.

As for Rex's response, I don't think it makes him unprofessional -- I think it makes him human. Yes, this is a long-time medical professional -- but Rex, my Rex, is a guy with a big heart -- and once in a while -- as he says in the Monday strip that follows these "It all gets to you." What the snarkers also fail to consider is that I might be setting up something that will pay off later -- stick around for the next week of strips and you'll see that.

Now I keep reminding myself that the full readership of the strip far outnumbers the CK comment board snarkers who seem to live to gripe about it. Most folks read it, enjoy it, and go on about their lives -- as they should. Those of you who drop by here to see the B&W/toned version, seem to do so because you enjoy it -- and my Facebook followers certainly have been positive in their response. We have also not lost any newspapers with the switchover in writers -- and papers often take a shift in creators as an excuse to drop a feature. So I think I have a good perspective on the more typical response to my work on REX. The snarkers are an exception, and not representative of the average reader. I just find it unfortunate that they've so strongly taken over the comments section on CK -- keeping a real conversation about the strip from happening in favor of the eight-thousandth unfunny complaint that "Sarah has a big head" or "June is sore."

Sigh....

So here we go. Rex tells off Dolly -- and we get a little info about Dolly's true motivations (to be followed up on some time from now). Rex does his rounds at the hospital, and we get back to Jordan, Milton and Heather. Life moves forward.
No background info to add this week -- the strips speak for themselves.
Rene's out the window and a pair of gangster types confront Kelly and Sarah. The white suited fellow with the pencil mustache is based on FLASH GORDON artist, Alex Raymond -- while the craggy faced fellow is somewhat inspired by B-movie character actor Mike Mazurki. Wednesday has my favorite gag in the strip so far -- I had the leopard/stripes exchange in my head long before I actually wrote this sequence.

Note the art error -- Raymond's shirt and tie switch from black and white to white and black. Oops!

The Sunday page was my response to those who've been troubled by me not adhering 100% to past continuity. Well, folks -- the Rex and June of today's strips can't really be the Rex and June of two or more decades ago -- it just doesn't make sense. So while they remain essentially the same characters, they can't be precisely the same -- a couple with kids this young can't have nearly 70 years of back history. And I can't be expected to remain faithful to plot points from eras of the strip I have no access to -- so we're moving forward -- and here we go.

Plus it gave me an excuse to draw "classic" Rex -- if only this once.

The comics in the attic story wraps up, for now. We'll get back to Buck and the Harwoods Sr. and Jr. at some point, but for now we're shifting gears and wrapping up plot threads left unresolved by the previous writer.

In the 7-17 Sunday, Kelly confirms what Holly told her at the museum gala -- and we're left wondering what Dolly Pierpont is really up to.

I'll confess here that Rene Belluso is not my favorite character in the strip. He's out the window in the second Sunday strip here, and I'm happy to see him go. Though as some have pointed out -- by revealing that he's not quite what he seemed and didn't even really look as he presented himself (the Walter White/Heisenberg look is on purpose -- just me having some fun) I've now made him a compelling character in the moment that I'm ejecting him from the strip...! Well -- maybe he'll be back someday, if I can find something interesting to do with him. But no more art lessons from him for li'l Sarah.

To answer one question from a reader -- how could Hank Sr. have tutored Rene, when Rene said he was trained in Italy? Well -- would you believe everything Rene told you? We only have his word as regards his background -- and I wouldn't trust an admitted forger to be telling me the truth about anything.

As for the gangsters who show up looking for Rene -- the fellow in white is (visually) based on the great cartoonist, Alex (FLASH GORDON) Raymond -- and the big bruiser in the pinstripes is inspired by the classic B-movie character actor Mike Mazurki. We'll be seeing more of them in the strips that follow these.

Thursday's strip is a shout out to a real life collector of horror/monster memorabilia, who also happens to be one of my favorite movie directors. I'll let you figure it out from there.

Saturday's strip hints at events yet to come.

Sunday recaps recent events in the strip -- but also suggests that there may be changes ahead....
After focusing on the comics in the attic storyline for a while, we switch gears back to Sarah, Dolly and the museum. Holly was introduced as a museum employee in a Sunday page back in June of 2014. We spent an entire Sunday page establishing her -- and then she was never seen again. I thought she was too appealing a character to disappear forever, so I brought her back for this sequence, and have plans for future appearances. Here's one panel from that introductory Sunday page.

Holly spills the beans regarding some of Dolly Pierpont's secrets. There will be much more to this -- but you'll have to keep coming back to find out just where this is going. As always, you can follow the strip every day at the Comics Kingdom website -- and a (cheap!) subscription gets you access to a decade of archived strips, and your favorites -- new and classic -- emailed to you every day. Please consider signing up, will you? It's a great way to support the cartoonists whose work you follow.

The story over the next few months will shift back and forth from the comics plot line, back to Sarah and Dolly, then more with Milton, Heather and Jordan -- and yes, Rex doing his doctor thing. I have plenty of story material planned out -- but can only do so much in each individual strip. So if you're wondering what happened to so-and-so, or why haven't we seen such-and-such lately -- well, stick around, folks, we'll get to it all.
Time to get on with the museum gala. Monday establishes that Rex is back to work after taking some time off to be home with newborn Michael. Some readers are itching for me to get back to medical themed stories -- and that is part of the plan -- but there are a lot of dangling plot threads that need to be tied up, so first things first. Still, even if we are not following him to the hospital and clinic -- he's going there every work day. And I'd say a few days have passed between the 6-12 Sunday strip and the 6-13 Monday.

For those wondering what's happened to my PHANTOM posts -- I will catch up on those eventually. I have been very busy getting REX on track schedule-wise (we had been working far too close to deadline) -- working 7 day weeks for some time, so something had to give -- and that was largely this blog. One of these days I'll sort through the gazillion photos in my files and post on any number of subjects that should have been posted here -- but for now, it's weekly REX and eventually catching up on THE PHANTOM.

Next week, even though we're at the gala, we'll get back to the comics in the attic story. And remember you can read this day by day at the COMICS KINGDOM website.
You can't see these on Comics Kingdom -- so thats why I share them here.

I also thought you might enjoy seeing the logos I made for the comic books that have appeared in the strip. It didn't make sense to redraw these every single time -- so I whipped these up and have reused them multiple times -- dropping them in and changing them to fit perspective, etc. And no. I'm not going to draw and write complete interiors for any of these -- though it certainly is a fun notion to consider...!

With Hank Jr.'s announcement that there is more than one stack of comics in the attic, Buck and Rex rescue the rest. I should note that they are not ripping up the floorboards -- but just pulling this stuff out from underneath. I once lived in a house with an attic that had easy access to the space under the floorboards and the notion of how simple it would be to hide stuff under there always stuck with me. This story allowed me to use the idea at last. The artwork would have been rolled up, like tubes, to fit. I never stated that in the strips, but showed the art pages curled up some to hint at it at least.

The monetary value is based on the notion that these are mint/near mint artists' file copies equivalent to EC titles -- signed by a major artist. The art value is also based on sales of original EC art.

I was amused that one person posting in the Comics Kingdom comments section complained that my math was off regarding five hundred thousand being half a million! This is why I can't take those comments too seriously. So many folks there also jumped to the conclusion that Rex was going to keep the comic books -- and this was going to be another "Morgans get free stuff" story. Nope. It was always my intention to turn that overdone trope on its head -- and have Rex insisting on returning the treasure trove.

I also shake my head over the snarkers who were all aflutter over me retconning the history of the Morgan's house -- when that goes back some eighteen years -- who seemed unable to recall that Rex has a home office/study -- well established in very recent strips. They thought Rex was going to haul all this stuff to the clinic? Gee -- you'd think some of them are just looking for something to gripe about...?

And let me address the house origins once again. Yes, I'm rebooting/retconning some elements in the strip so we can move forward, unencumbered by decades of largely inaccessible continuity. The strip has, aside from four comic books in the 1950s, never been reprinted in book form. King Features does not have a complete run of it in their files. There are years and years of the strip that I have no access to whatsoever. I'd love to see Frank Springer's run on the feature -- but aside from a handful of examples on the web -- it's no where to be found. I have a few clippings from Fernando DaSilva's run -- but no complete stories. King's online archive begins toward the end of the Tony DiPreta period -- October 1998.

And I've read the earliest available strips. In them, a recently married Rex and June (pregnant with Sarah) are selling June's house, and there is talk of them putting the proceeds of the sale toward the "new house." They move into the "new house" in 2000, just after Sarah's birth (yes, the six year old was born sixteen years ago) and the hiring of nanny Heather. There is talk of it being their "dream house." Nowhere, in any of the archived strips from this period is there any mention of the house having been newly and specially built for the Morgans. I have no doubt this was established -- as long-time readers remember it -- but it had to have been established in strips predating what is available in King's archives.

So -- as far as I'm concerned, the history of the house, prior to the Morgans moving in, is for me to decide as it suits the purpose of the story. Retconned. Rebooted. Changed. And it's all moving forward from here on.
It seems, from comments I've received, that my Hank Jr./Sr. fakeout regarding the signatures in the comics worked. I was worried most readers would see through it -- but I guess I pulled off the surprise.

I was glad to be able to return Buck to our story, as I felt we'd dropped him just as he was becoming interesting. And he needed to repay Rex that loan, darn it! (Which he does on 5-30-16 below). There was nothing in previous strips establishing him as a comic book fan -- but nothing that would keep me from adding that element to his background.

Some readers seemed concerned that Rex and/or Buck were planning to keep the comic books for themselves -- but that was never my intent -- and the truth is revealed in the 6-2-16 daily. The books go back to the Harwoods -- and that was always Rex's plan.

Doing a comic book themed story right off the bat is certainly a little self indulgent -- but the story fits in with several other plot elements that I need to wrap up, and you'll all see how as it unfolds. We will be seeing a good deal of the Harwoods -- and Buck, as this plays out -- but I promise it won't be the only ongoing plotline here. I have Dolly, Rene, Heather, Milton and Jordan to deal with, as well as Sarah's gala and her book -- and the Morgan's eventual move to a new home, all on my plate. This, plus wanting to get back to seeing Rex practicing medicine more regularly. It's a lot to juggle, and I hope you'll stick with me while I work it all out. I do know where I'm going with all this -- but to tell you would spoil the story, wouldn't it?
Had to get it out of my system. It will tie into other current events in the Morgan's world -- you'll just have to wait and see how. This is my comic strip format love letter to EC Comics -- though the comics you'll (eventually) see aren't exactly ECs -- just similar.

Some long-time REX readers are upset that I've "retconned" a bit of the strip's history. In my version, the Morgans bought this house, and are not the original owners -- it having been built in the 1950s. This conflicts with the previous writer's version in which the Morgans had the house built.

As I've explained elsewhere, the current Rex and June couldn't possibly be the same characters that appeared in the 1950s -- or even more recent decades. They'd be far too old to be still having children, even accounting for "comic strip time." So I figure there have been unannounced "soft reboots" every now and then anyhow -- and I'm doing one now. This one just happens to be announced! I'll stick with the continuity of the past few years -- anything I drew, especially -- but anything more than four or five years ago? As far as I'm concerned, that happened to a Rex and June from some previous comic strip universe. I'm far more interested in picking up where we are today, and moving on from there. I want to tell the best stories I can, and having to juggle decades of largely forgotten and ephemeral continuity does not play into my plans.

I made an art error in the backgrounds of some of these daily strips -- those floorboards should be running the other way. Mea culpa. And if that's the worst mistake I ever make on the strip, I can live with that. Someday I'll discuss the time constraints under which these strips are produced -- for now I'll just note that those who think I can spend an entire day drawing one daily strip are quite mistaken.
Once again, Ronn Sutton is helping out with the pencils on the daily strips. Sarah and Abby encounter the stinky side of nature -- and June makes her opinion known. The skunking of Sarah was done to signal that bad things CAN happen to the kid, as she's lead a charmed life up until now -- and I'd like to shake things up a bit -- or at least have that option.

The anti-stink treatment mentioned here is incomplete -- and anyone contemplating using it should do a good deal more research into it, as the full method isn't exactly explained here. Don't try this at home, and all that.

Some readers complained about the two day sequence of Sarah and Abby playing ball -- but I felt I needed the extra "beat." I wanted to show her playing like a regular kid for once -- and one daily strip wasn't enough. So there.

I did consider having Rex and June pull out the kiddie pool from the garage to clean up kid and dog outside-- but even not showing it, I figured I'd be pilloried for even suggesting little Sarah was starkers outside! So inside and the bathtub it was.
In order to catch up a little on a much too tight deadline, I called in fellow cartoonist Ronn Sutton to help with the pencils on the dailies. He worked on next week's strips, too. These are, again, the gray toned dailies done for the newspapers that run the strip in glorious black and white (as they should). The King Features-hired anonymous colorist of the daily strips does a fine job -- but given a choice, I still like my dailies sans color.

After seeing this week in print, I realized June should have been saying electrical sockets, not plugs -- but that was a common misuse of the word in my neck of the woods when growing up, so it didn't sound wrong to me when writing it. Oh, well -- I can always say June grew up saying it wrong, too!

The diner in the Sunday page may look a little familiar to my Twin City pals -- I based it on St. Paul's Mickey's -- a favorite lunch stop when I lived in Minnesota. And of course "Zippy Service" is a nod to Bill Griffith, whose comic strip often features classic diners.

Some readers seem confused about baby Michael being there in the Sunday page -- I thought I didn't have to spell it out that Rex and June had gone home and picked him up before heading to lunch. I'm trying to move things along at a faster pace now that I'm running the show, so at times I'm just going to skip over minor stuff like that and figure the readers can fill in the blanks.

And yes, we're done with Franco and Cilla.
