My sideshow crew is currently on display on the 2nd floor of the Main Gallery at MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design). Info on the show and reception can be found below the photo.

MCAD Faculty Responds

Main Gallery/Concourse Gallery/Corridor Gallery

Reception: Friday, Sept. 7, 6-8 p.m.

Recent works in all media by MCAD faculty address differing aspects of the grotesque in art and design--from the abject to the uncanny, from the humorous to the unnervingly offbeat.

Why I love Minneapolis

Well, one of the reasons, anyway -- is that you can find such cool places to hang out as The Bad Waitress. Located just a few blocks from MCAD, this great pop culture-themed diner, not only has good food -- but the walls are chock full of monster, comic book, pulp fiction and cult movie stuff -- heck, it looks like I decorated the place! Marvel Super Hero and Universal Monster "Old Maid" cards serve to identify your booth, table or counter space -- and the "Revenge of the Creature" poster looms large in the men's room. Service can get a little slow when the place is packed -- but the food is worth waiting for -- and heck -- just dig all that cool stuff in the meantime. If only I could slip that copy of "Glance" out of the frame so I could read it....

Universal Monster Army mini-meet

Here are some pics from this afternoon's get together of members of the Universal Monster Army (see Yahoo Groups for more info). Hosted by our founder, the "Famous Monster of Minneapolis," other attendees included "Creepy Jeff," "Packy Paul" and Richard Olsen (what, no nickname?) -- of course, I was there -- as "Scary Terry," of course. Photos show Richard gifting other members with his handmade UniMonster "fantasy" placemats (very cool!) -- as well as some rare monster items brought for show. Only the Creature from the Black Lagoon plaque would be needed to make a complete set of these particularly rare monster items. Some camera tricks show the backside of two plaques, for a look at the sculpts minus the gaudy litho paint on the front.

Bust from the Black Lagoon

This casting of Tony McVey's CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON bust has been sitting, unpainted on my shelf for far too long -- so, since I don't have all that much to do right now (ha!), I took the time today to give the Gillman a proper paint job.

Carnival Sideshow -- family portrait

Here's the entire sideshow family -- this group of castings will be on display at the MCAD faculty art show here in Minneapolis -- Aug 24 through Oct 7, with a reception Friday September 7 from 6 to 8 PM. I intend to sculpt more figures along this line -- when done, they'll be posted here.

Karloff as THE MUMMY

Here's a preview of my wraparound cover illustration for the next issue of SCARY MONSTERS magazine. This is, of course, Boris Karloff as he appeared in THE MUMMY. Acrylic on illustration board. Click on the image for a larger view.

More Sideshow

Here's the last figure in this batch of Sideshow characters. This is Johnny Eck -- also one of the performers in Tod Browning's "Freaks." This is based on various photos from multiple sources-- as well as still frames from the movie.

Beatty's Minature Sideshow and Odditorium: Part Two

More sideshow sculptures, as promised. Both from Tod Browning's "Freaks," here are Koo Koo the Bird Lady and Angelo Rossitto! More to come (as hinted in the group shot....)

Life drawing -- one more for the road....

Here are a few of the results from this week's life drawing session. One seated pose offered me such a bad view that I only drew the model's arm -- and then did a bunch of quick sketches of the other artists...!
